Benjamin Tanner was born in New York in 1775. At an early age he manifested a talent for drawing and designing, and after receiving his education he began to learn the art of engraving. In December, 1799, he went to Philadelphia, where he established his business, and aided his brother Henry in publishing maps. In 1816 he formed a bank-note engraving establishment, under the name of Tanner, Vallanee, Kearny and Co., which tie afterward discontinued, and in 1835 established a blank check note and draft publishing office, which he abandoned in 1845. He died three years later in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1848
