June 8th Auction Prices Realized and June 22nd Syndication Invitation

This Saturday marked another successful auction at Arader Galleries!  We are delighted to announce our well attended sale totaled $1,019,500. The 222 lot sale featured a selection of outstanding material including excellent examples of John James Audubon's Birds of America as well as rare maps, books and natural history watercolors and engravings.

Highlights were the beautiful Audubon Female Turkey (Lot 14, $81,250), and Virginian Partridge (Lot 15, $62,500); a number of stunning natural history engravings sold from Robert Thornton's Temple of Flora, as well as watercolors after Dietzsch, and by Samuel Howitt and Alister MacDonald. 

The map section featured frequent bidding with some iconic works selling such as Saxton's Map of the Anglia (Lot 118, $9,375), Blaeu World Map (Lot 148, $12,500), and the Disturnell Map of Texas (Lot 187, $60,000). Below is a full listing of the prices realized for our June auction. 

Our next big event will be June 22nd, a distribution of a collection of 222 aquatints from John James Audubon's "Birds of America". It is a collection of absolute masterpieces; the finest to come on the market in over 50 years. They are in exceptional condition and exactly as John James Audubon intended for his original audience over 180 years ago.  

Each share in this distribution consists of 4 aquatints and is offered for $38,000. Each shareholder will draw a number from 1 to 55 to determine the order of selection in the first round. The first round of selection will go sequentially from 1 to 55 with each shareholder picking ONE acquaint. In the second round, the order of selection is reversed, 55 to 1, with each shareholder selecting THREE acquaints. The distribution will take place on Saturday, June 22, at 1 PM at Arader Galleries, 1016 Madison Avenue, New York, NY 10075. Each shareholder can return their share for any reason for a full refund up to 90 days after the distribution.

In this distribution of 4 images per $38,000 share, the average price is $9500 per aquatint. Sets of Audubon have been selling at auction in the $8000000 to $11,000,000 range for the last 10 years. That averages out to $21000 each for the 435 aquatints. There are no Audubon aquatints with color as fine as this. This represents a compelling value for the quality of color, condition, and impression. Arader Galleries will buy back any share for the full amount anytime 90 days after the distribution.
