    At the turn of the century, the accomplished landscape artist Richard Rummell (1848-1924) painted a panoramic bird’s-eye view watercolor of Dartmouth College. In this selection of paintings of American colleges and universities, Rummell selected the twenty best colleges in the nation at the time of painting. His inclusion of these universities in his oeuvre indicates his immense respect for these institutions. From this watercolor, a copper-plate was engraved and a limited number of pulls (engravings) were distributed. Today, Arader Galleries owns the collection of copper plates used for engraving and watercolors. Using the original process and 100 year old original plates, Arader is proudly re-striking and making the beautiful college view available for acquisition the same way it was 100 years ago.

    This Ivy league school was founded in 1769 by Eleazar Wheelock, a Congregational minister from Connecticut with the mission to educate young people, both English and Native American. The school is located in Hannover, New Hampshire on the bank of the Connecticut river. A prestigious liberal arts college, the university has been a pioneer of education through its trailblazing schools, including some of the nation’s first graduate schools in business and engineering, along with the fourth oldest medical school in the nation.

    The iconic Dartmouth green is centered in the view with the Reed, Thornton, Dartmouth and Wentworth halls visible to the center of the view with their white walls peeping up from over a row of trees. Behind them are the Bartlet, Wentworth, and Fayerweather halls, with their distinctive red brick walls rendered in lovely color. Receding into the background from the front left of the view, one can observe the Collis student center, Robinson Hall, McNutt Hall,  and Parkhurst halls. Behind these buildings the Massachusetts Hall can be seen, with both the South and North Hall buildings in clear view. On the right hand side of the view, Wilson and New Hampshire Halls are apparent, along with the chimney of the Heating and Electric Plant. The picturesque Baker library and its distinctive bell tower are visible as the white building in the back left behind the green with a tower. The classically-inspired columns of the Webster Hall/Rauner special collections library can be seen facing the green adjacent to the Baker Library.
