Fine Original Gouache of Australian Wildflowers
Marian Ellis Rowan (1848-1922). Fine Original Gouache of Australian Wildflowers. 1889.
$2,000
An exquisite gouache of wild-flowers native to the eastern coast of Australia and New Zealand. Ellis Rowan, artist, naturalist and explorer, was one of Australia's most eminent and prolific botanical illustrators, in addition to producing many fine works illustrating birds, butterflies and insects, many for the first time. Her work is botanically accurate as well as aesthetically pleasing. She traveled extensively throughout Australia and New Zealand, and her works were published in 1898 in "A Flower-Hunter in Queensland and New Zealand".
She also visited North America and provided the illustrations, many in colour, to "A Guide to the Wild Flowers", by Alice Lounsberry, published in New York in 1899 as well as "Guide to the Trees" (1900), and "Southern Wild Flowers and Trees "(1901) also by Lounsberry.
