February 28, 2015, Natural History & Americana Auction Success & Prices Realized

Saturday's Natural History and Americana sale was a huge success. Congratulations to all of the successful bidders!

Interest in the works of John James Audubon has never been stronger, and this sale included some of his most memorable images.  A very fine example of the Carolina Parrot sparked very competitive bidding, ending with a winning bid of $170,800 with premium.  The Ivory Billed Woodpecker also drew lots of attention, bringing a very strong $109,800 with premium.

As always, the Friday evening before the sale featured lectures focused on highlights of the sale. Mike Foley gave a lively talk about the close ties between Audubon's Quadupeds  and the history of Texas.  Audubon himself visited the new Republic of Texas in 1837, his son John Woodhouse visited again in 1845, and fully fifteen of the mammals were drawn in Texas or from Texas specimens. And thirteen of them were in the sale!

In fact,Saturday's sale featured the largest selection of individual plates from Audubon's Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America to come  up for sale in many years. And the lithographs were all notable for their rich, lovely color and perfect patina. Collectors took notice, and bidding was spirited for such places as the Canada Lynx ($10,980 with premium), the charming Common Mouse ($8,540 with premium), and the Cougar Female and Young ($13,420 with premium).

Guests Friday, also had the privilege of hearing Brooks Joyner's learned talk about Karl Bodmer's engravings from Travels in the Interior of North America. Brooks has years of direct experience with the work of this fabulous artist, including the Directorship of the Joslyn Art Museum which has the world's major collection of his work. All attending his insightful lecture gained a new, deeper appreciation of the sources of Bodmer's technique.

Collectors have longed recognized the beauty and importance of these exquisite engravings, and Saturday's sale was no exception. Very strong bidding was seen for such iconic images as Pehriska-Ruhpa, a Minatarre or Big-Bellied Indian ( $10,980 with premium), Wahk-Ta-Ge-Li, A Sioux Warrior ($10,980 with premium) and the great Shi-Chida and Maschi Karehde, Mandan Indians ($20,750 with premium).

Our sincere thanks go out to all of you who participated in the auction. Our next sale will be on April 18th and is already looking like it may be our biggest ever!  Watch for more information in coming weeks.  And good luck!
