Auction Results and Prices Realized for June 13th Auction of Maps, Views, Rare Books and Natural History Through the Ages
We are delighted to announce that our June 13th auction was a resounding success. The sale, our largest to date, featured 311 lots including a wonderful selection of Audubon’s Birds and Quadrupeds, an extensive collection of fine maps and views, excellent rare books and atlases, paintings and watercolors from artists such as Samuel Palmer and Edward Lear, as well as a varied offering of natural history featuring works by Pierre-Joseph Redouté as well as Mark Catesby, George Catlin, and Karl Bodmer. The auction totaled $2,085,975. As a direct result to Mr. Arader's commitment to philanthropy in supporting cultural and academic institutions the sale will have raised over $300,000 for various programs around the country.
Friday preceding the auction, the gallery hosted an exciting evening featuring a riveting lecture by Dr. Barney Lipscomb, the Leonhardt Chair of Texas Botany at the Botanical Research Institute of Texas, detailing the fusion of art and science in the 18th and 19th centuries, as seen through the work of Pierre-Joseph Redouté.
Highlights of the Audubon section of the sale included the Mocking Bird (Lot 3), the state bird of Texas, which sold for $30,500. Following an exciting back and forth between bidders in the room and on the phone, the Pileated Woodpecker (Lot 17) achieved $103,700 and The Brown Pelican sitting (Lot 20) sold for $107,360. The American Wildcat (Lot 32) was the standout success within Audubon’s Quadrupeds achieving $15,860.
Within the map section, Young’s New Map of Texas (Lot 100) sold for $7,320. Lorenz Fries’ Orbis Typus Universalis (Lot 118) achieved double the low estimate at $10,980. Two fine maps of 16th century Italy (Lots 137 &138) were successful, realizing $4,575 and $3,050 respectively.
There was considerable excitement in the room as the rare books and atlases saw frenzied interest. The Theatrum Orbis Terrarum by Abraham Ortelius (Lot 187) sold for $30,500 and Christopher Saxton’s Atlas of England and Wales (Lot 190) achieved an impressive $195,200.
Other highlights from the sale included Edward Lear’s coastal watercolor of Damascus (Lot 200) attaining more than twice the low estimate at $51,850. The Goatherd by Samuel Palmer (Lot 205) sold for $14,640 and Redouté’s beautiful original watercolor the Nodding Star-of-Bethlehem (Lot 243) realized a price of $14,640.
Arader Galleries will be holding a limited sale with Guernsey's Auction House, The material focusing on Pirates and the Caribbean, and will be held on August 5th at 5:30 pm. We will proceed with our general auction calendar on in September with a sale featuring a selection of John James Audubon prints, fine maps, rare atlases and other natural history works of art.
