November 21, 2015 Arader Galleries Auction Prices Realized
We
are thrilled to announce Arader Galleries’ final auction of the year was an
outstanding success. The sale featured 217 lots including a stunning selection
of Audubon’s birds and quadrupeds, a collection of America’s finest and most
important maps from the Ben Carter Collection, as well as a varied offering of
natural history and western material. The auction achieved $1,410,683, putting
the total for our auctions in 2015 at just under $13 million. As a result of Saturday’s
sale alone, we have raised over $60,000 for the teaching program at the
University of South Carolina.
Friday preceding the auction, the gallery hosted an exciting
evening featuring an outstanding educational lecture by Arader Galleries’ own
rare book expert, Kate Hunter. The lecture detailed the varied nuances of
collecting natural history color plate books including provenance, condition,
and market availability.
Highlights of the sale on Saturday included, Audubon’s
Snowy Heron (Lot 6) achieving an impressive price of $103,000. Following an
exciting back and forth between bidders in the room and on the phone, the Golden
Eagle (Lot 1) sold for $21,960. The Northern Winter Hare (Lot 22) achieved
$2,196, the top performer for Audubon’s quadrupeds. Other natural history works
of note were Nicolas Huet’s original watercolor of a Martin-Chasseur Lazuli
(Lot 24), selling for $12,200 and a stunning group of original watercolors
(Lots 74-78) by the father of Indian botany, William Roxburgh, which, together
achieved over $200,000.
The Ben Carter collection of historic and important maps
of America was highly successful, with the highlight being Henry Popple’s Map
of British Empire in America…(Lot 83) which sold for $128,000. Other maps and views performing well were
Thomas Holme’s Mapp of Ye Improved part of Pennsylvania… (Lot 93), which sold
for $30,500, a beautiful Curier & Ives print entitled, Whale Fishery or
Sperm Whale ‘in a flurry’ (Lot 133), sold for $6,100, and a charming
hand-colored engraving of a Panorama of Washington D.C. (Lot 139) sold for
$5,490.
Arader Galleries’ next auction will be on January 23rd
of 2016. The material already has some amazing examples from Audubon’s Birds of America in store, as well as
works by Pierre-Joseph Redoute, Heinrich Bunting and Giovanni Battista Piranesi.
As usual, the sale will include other fine maps, rare books and natural history
works on paper from the finest artists in American and European history. With
your help we hope to make 2016 as successful as a year as 2015 was!
