Arader Galleries Summer Auction Prices Realized
Arader Galleries' is thrilled to share the results of our successful Summer Auction this past Saturday, June 13, 2016. The 207 lot sale included a stunning offering of Audubon’s Birds and Quadrupeds, various examples of natural history works, a wonderful collection of fine paintings, maps, views, and rare books. The auction totaled $925,016.
The evening preceding the sale the second floor of 1016 Madison played host for a riveting lecture by Jean Bochnowski, the Director of the John James Audubon Center at Mill Grove. Jean's talk offered a detailed and captivating history of John James Audubon's impressive life, encapsulating both his successes and hardships. Patrons were urged to designate 20% of their hammer price to be donated to aid in the wonderful work that Jean and the staff at the Center at Mill Grove are doing to educate our youth about Audubon and his role in American history. They are currently building a beautiful addition to the center, a conservation center and museum, which will break ground this October.
Highlights of the Audubon section of the sale included the Male Turkey (Lot 19), Audubon's first plate in Bird's of America, which achieved $85,400. The Trumpeter Swan, Young (Lot 15) achieved a notable $24,400. In the Quads the standout item was the Common Deer (Lot 36), which sold for $14,640.
Other highlights from the sale include August Lohr's stunning View of Mexico (Lot 106) selling for $8,125 and another western artist made waves with Thomas Moran's etching of Tower Falls (Lot 109) achieving $10,370. Of the offering of fine maps included in the sale the two standouts were the Covens & Mortier's edition of the seminal Mitchell Map of British and French Dominions...(Lot 117) selling for $14,640 and Fry & Jefferson's Map of Virginia (Lot 127) realizing $36,600.
