Arader Galleries June 3rd Auction Prices Realized and Success Report

Dear Friends,

We are delighted to announce that our Summer Auction was a resounding success. Held on the afternoon of Saturday June 3rd, the auction featured 273 works by artists and cartographers from the 16th through the 20th centuries. The sale achieved an impressive total of $1,511,808

The auction started with a bang as works from John James Audubon's Birds of America drew spirited bidding both in the room and on the phones, Lot 9 the Great American Hen (Female Turkey) achieved a new auction record for this plate selling for $97,600, Lot 10 the Carolina Parrot selling for $170,800, Lot 11 the Ivory-Billed Woodpecker selling for $85,400, and Lot 12, The Pileated Woodpecker selling for 146,400. 

Next was a grouping of natural history works on paper which included two beautiful works by Basil Besler whose images focused on Succulents, Lots 54 & 55 went for $1,586 each. The Black Jamaican Pineapple by George Brookshaw had intense bidding in the saleroom, achieving a total of $2,318. Finally a beautiful English School watercolor of a Quagga sold for $6,100. 

The auction featured a collection of top notch rare books that garnered a spirited round of bidding both in the room, online, and on the phones. A Buller second edition of The History of the Birds of New Zealand achieved $5,080 and a Robert's & Jeffrey's Natural History of Florida came to $3,965, but the star of the show was a beautifully colored Otrelius Theatre De l'Univers which achieved a hefty $50,020. 

In the maps section there were a number of notable highlights including a very rare John Churchman map of the Chesapeake Bay, which after furious back and forth bidding over the phone achieved a premium price of $35,380. Other highlights were a Emory Lithographed map of Texas which sold for $9,760, a Lea and Overton map of America selling for $6,100 and a De Wit Portolan sea chart of Europe achieving $5,080.

Arader Galleries' next live auction will be on September 23rd and will include a vast selection of works on paper from the 16th to 19th centuries including natural history engravings & watercolors, maps, views and rare books. Also keep an eye out for some online only auctions this summer!
