The best use of my many collecting passions
I focus on the transfer, distribution and promotion of iconic imagery from the original work to the engraving, lithograph or chromolithograph (the Morans of the Yellowstone are my favorite.) Maybe Lori has one or two that she could write to you about. We have some with Moran's corrections.
The last big Bierstadt show was called "Art and Commerce" and your image was a key part of their exhibition.
This has been one of my passions for many years for natural history images. I have the largest collection in the world of original watercolors and the engravings that were made from the template. It demonstrates WHY the images were made and how the information was spread to the world. Before this they were just very beautiful works of art owned by Kings and their sisters, brothers, uncles, aunts and children. It was the "Velin du Roi" very fancy but not very useful for humanity.
Your Bierstant told a wonderful story of disappearing Buffalo and Indians. You saw the magnificent template at the National Gallery. But your image spread the world to a large public. They are equally important but one is worth $50,000. The other is worth $100 million!
