Auction Results December 5, 2020

Arader Galleries is thrilled to announce that last weekend’s auction was a great success. The sale brought in an impressive $4,071,240 including the buyer's premium. The 183-lot sale featured a wide selection of material including works by John James Audubon, Original Natural History Watercolors, Fine European and American Oil Paintings, Rare Maps, Rare Books, & Assorted Americana. The auction produced many notable highlights: Audubon's Male Turkey (Lot 1, $120,000), The Female Turkey (Lot 2, $48,000), The Columbia Jay (Lot 8, $30,000), The Canada Goose (Lot 17, $$73,200), and the Black-bellied Darter (Lot 21, $31,200). There were a number of masterful natural history watercolors that sold including works by noted Georgian artist, John Abbott (Lot 25, $13,200 & Lot 26, $15,600), a number of original field sketches by Roger Tory Peterson (Lots 38-42), and all five of the original Redoute watercolors painted for Empress Josephine (Lots 47-51). Next in the sale was an impressive offering of European and American oil paintings. Highlights included: A Withoos Still life (Lot 55, $7,800), a George Catlin oil of Ostrich Shooting in South America (Lot 57, $60,000), and a George Harvey oil painting of Winter Travelers in a Pine Forest (Lot 87, $52,800), To close the sale there was an extensive offering of rare maps including a wonderful selection of Italian School maps from the 16th Century (Lots 113-128). Other maps sold included an 1802 edition of Arrowsmith's Map of the United States (Lot 152, $21,000), Brigg's Map of North America, the first to show California as an Island (Lot 154, $11,400), a Rare map of Galveston Bay Texas from 1835 (Lot 165, $91,200), and second edition of Gordon's Plan of Savannah (Lot 167, $116,400).
