A wonderful chance for people living in the Delaware Valley in 2026. I will donate $100,000 to make this a memorable year. Any suggestions?

Richardo's lecture is the best I have ever heard about the Valley Forge Winter of 1777-8.  Sadly with no power whatsoever in Upper Merion Township, your help as a former professor of French at Villanova and a township supervisor is critical.

Why my urgency and passion?   Here is the reason:

My father was Governor Milton Shapp's Secretary of Commerce during the Bicentennial.    He went to Paris and obtained the right to have a World's Fair for this commemoration and the plan was set.  Sadly, the Mayor, Frank Rizzo, even though he was a friend of my father's did not want to displace the people living near the airport that would have lost their homes.  So the fair was cancelled!

Then he went to President Richard Nixon and was told that funds would be shared equally with all 50 states and not focused on Philadelphia.

As a result, celebrations in the Delaware Valley were a disaster.  I remember driving into the City on July 4, 1976 in the afternoon and there was no traffic.  And all I saw that day was the Comcast Building on fire!  The City of Philadelphia was deserted on this incredibly important day!!!

Hopefully we can do better for this 250th anniversary.  Upper Merion is the best township known to me anywhere.  Here is a chance to let the world know.

Dear Carole and Graham,

Thank you for the note. I’d be delighted to speak to the students, faculty, and staff of Upper Merion Township High School—and anybody else you’d like to invite! My academic year at the War College is winding down and I’ll have some free time over the next couple of months. Conversely, I’ll also have open dates at the beginning of the 2025 academic year. Thanks so much.

All the best,

Rick Herrera

We have a new Superintendant of Schools whom I've not yet met, but may meet tomorrow.
She would be the person to contact perhaps, or Alice Hope, the Chair of the School Board.
I'll ask.
thanks~

Understanding what happened to Washington and him men in December 1777 should be known well by anyone living in Upper Merion Township

Thank you for sharing this correspondence with us, Graham.
I'm sorry I missed Dr. Herrera's presentation.

Maybe next time if he's in our area again!

Dear Graham,

Thanks so much. I’m glad you enjoyed the talk. It was a slightly higher level look at Washington derived from my talk on Feeding Washington’s Army—that talk is more focused on elements related to the book and such.

I’d love to speak to your friends and clients in New York, Gulph Mills, and Philadelphia, but especially to high school students. I owe, in great part, my becoming a historian to my freshman history teacher, Barry Norcross. Naturally, I’d also love to visit your home, see your maps, and chat. My calendar through June is pretty packed, but it opens up in July, and I’ll have opens blocks through the remainder of the year—when I’m not teaching, of course. I look forward to hearing from you.

All the best,

Rick
